FEALing; connected, but not contacted

The recent pandemic has highlighted certain human behaviours, as well as strengths and weaknesses. It has given us hard lessons but also brought up good aspects, we are learning to be
united more than ever without physically being together.
FEALing is a System of services that enable people to feel together reducing physical contact.
it is a research and Design project developed with a Spatial + Service design approach, during the Covid 19 lockdown, for the New normality that we are creating day by day.
The goal was to design a system of services and spaces that could reinforce the emerging way of
living.
The design team was both international and multidisciplinary with backgrounds from
Communication design and marketing, industrial design and interior design.

1° preliminary research

• To widen the search criteria, we have looked into every aspect of our personas. Our starting point and reference were our primary personas and their behaviors and feelings.

• We started with studying their interaction inside casa Feal, then the spaces they spend their time in during their regular day in quarantine, and lastly studying their emotions during these actions.

• Actions, spaces, and emotions were important to know the persona’s needs as we try to fulfill it from every perspective possible to result in a satisfied consumer of our product service system.

Forecast about the future

• decontamination space for belongings in the entrance

• social distancing will last and change the mobility in the city (e.g. public transportation)

• people are tired of staying at home but now that they can go out they are afraid

• there will be a trend of using more a combination of digital and physical

• school will alternate school days at home with school days in the class alternating students, this will allow to have fewer students in the classrooms and therefore to maintain social distances

• companies and universities will take advantage of the smart working to not overcrowd more the city and to not invest money in changing the working spaces for the new social distancing rules

• smart working is an effective method but it causes social problems and inability to organize work time / free time at home

• now that hospitals are more empty and safer and guarantee a safer working environment, the risks of contagion are greater in the city outside the hospital

• the hierarchies of importance of the works will change

THE ENVISIONED SCENARIO

“A world full of bubbles, where the new normal is having a private inside world in the public and outside world. Combining both existing and desirable spaces, new emergent dimensions coming to life, a dimension that is separate from our everyday life, a human-scale space, but in the same time connected.
A balance between global connectivity and individual expression and safety, building new environments that address daily problems and needs in a more efficient and sustainable way. Meanwhile, there is a reduction in social circles, it is still possible to connect and create relationships with others, and even in a more deep and meaningful way than before.”

DEFINE | DEVELOP
2° ideation phase

From the preliminary research were found design opportunities to generate the project concept:
FEALing is a System of services, a network of people and spaces, able to connect each other
more than ever allowing multiple interactions but keeping physical distancing.
All the system components were defined and designed, keeping a holistic perspective on the
overall context; from the home through the building to the city of Milan. The all process was
iterated many times till the final outcomes.

THE PROJECT OUTCOMES | DELIVER
FEALing spots:

It is a sharing system that enables people to develop stronger relationships but also to create
new ones. It starts from an important focus point in casa feal, a beautiful tree surrounded by green areas.
Treehouse works as a meeting point for all the residents. Where a library of different items is
accessible. Coming from the need for interaction and reduction of contact.
The libraries will display from books and board games to tools and other functional objects.
The space will be connected to the FEALing sharing system which consists of these lockers
where people will have access to shared resources through an app. Sharing, reserving and asking for special deliveries to the nearest location.
Fealing spots will be located on strategic areas such as parks and piazzas on the neighborhood,
And also around the city of Milan.

THE PROJECT OUTCOMES:
FEALing capsules:

Modular co-working spaces that can hold both, private or collaborative work and study.
These capsules were created as a physical environment with the perfect conditions for a
good working performance. but also a place where people want to be, rather than where they have to.
The capsules have different attributes, such as correct lighting, temperature, sound isolation, and
self-cleaning.
The capsule is completely flexible to any kind of work style preferences.
It also counts with flexible furniture that can be completely adapted to users needs.
As well as the sharing spots the capsules will be located around the city in a networking system
also supported by the app.
It will start from the San Siro neighborhood to then spread into different areas in Milan.

THE PROJECT OUTCOMES:
FEALing distribution system:

A special intervention for Casa Feal inspired by a “rope and a bucket”.
This starts from the sharing spot lockers in the main entrance where the residents of casa feal can receive their mail, packages, food, and items from the FEALing sharing system.
The packages are taken within the whole box locker of the inside of the complex and place them
to the elevator beside the living room balconies.
The elevator works with an automatic pulley system and is controlled through the FEALing app.
